Paṇḍitāḥ Samadarśinaḥ
विद्या विनय संपन्ने ब्राह्मणे गवि हस्तिनि
शुनि च एव श्वपाके च पण्डिताः समदर्शिनः । भ.गी.५.१८
vidyā vinaya saṁpanne
brāhmaṇe gavi hastini .
śuni ca eva śva-pāke ca
paṇḍitāḥ samadarśinaḥ .. — bg.5.18
vidyā = with education; vinaya = with gentleness; sampanne = fully equipped; brāhmaṇe = in a brahmin; gavi = in a cow; hastini = in an elephant; śuni = in a dog; ca = and; eva = certainly; śva-pāke = in an outcaste; ca = respectively; paṇḍitāḥ = the wise; samadarśinaḥ = one with equal vision;
S. Radhakrishnan:- Sages see with an equal eye, a learned and humble Brahmin, a cow, an elephant or even a dog or an outcaste.
samadarśinaḥ: see with an equal eye. The Eternal is the same in all, in animals, as in men, in learned Brahmins as in despised outcasts. The light of Brahman dwells in all bodies and is not affected by the differences in the bodies it illumines.
...... The wise see the one God in all beings and develop the quality of equal mindedness which is characteristic of the Divine.
श्रीमद्शंकराचार्य :- विद्येति । विद्य विनय संपन्नो विद्या च विनयश्च विद्य विनयौ विनय उपशमस्ताभ्यां विद्या विनयाभ्यां संपन्नो विद्या विनय संपन्नो विद्वान् विनीयश्च यो ब्रहामणस् तस्मिन् ब्राह्मणो गवि हस्तिनि शुनि चैव श्वपाके च पंडिताः सम दर्शिनः । विद्या विनय संपन्नो उत्तम संस्कारवति ब्राह्मणे सात्त्विके, मध्यमायां च राजस्यां गवि संस्कार हीनायां, अत्यंतमेव केवल तमसे हस्त्यादौ च, सत्त्वादि गुणैस्तज्जैश्च संस्कारैस्तथा राजसैस्तथा तामसैश्च संस्कारैर् अत्यम्तमेवास्पृष्टं समम् एकमविक्रियं ब्रह्मदुष्टं शीलं येषां पंडिताः सम दर्शिनः । १८ ।
Śrīmad Śaṅkarācārya:- vidyeti — vidya vinaya saṁpanno vidyā ca vinayaśca vidya vinayau vinaya upaśamastābhyāṁ vidyā vinayābhyāṁ saṁpanno vidyā vinaya saṁpanno vidvān vinīyaśca yo brahāmaṇas tasmin brāhmaṇo gavi hastini śuni caiva śvapāke ca paṁḍitāḥ sama darśinaḥ — vidyā vinaya saṁpanno uttama saṁskāravati brāhmaṇe sāttvike, madhyamāyāṁ ca rājasyāṁ gavi saṁskāra hīnāyāṁ, atyaṁtameva kevala tāmase hastyādau ca, sattvādi guṇaistajjaiśca saṁskāraistathā rājasaistathā tāmasaiśca saṁskārair atyamtameva aspṛṣṭaṁ samam ekam avikriyaṁ brahma drauṣṭaṁ śīlaṁ yeṣāṁ paṁḍitāḥ sama darśinaḥ — 18 —
Svāmi Śivānanda:- The Bhramin is Sāttvic; the cow is Rājasic; dog and outcaste are Tāmasic. In all of them the enlightened sage sees the one homogeneous immortal Self that is not affected by the three Guṇās and their tendencies.
